Chinese seismologists have recorded 515 aftershocks in the disaster area in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), which occurred over the past 24 hours after the main, most destructive earthquake. This was reported by China Central Television.
It is specified that up to 95% of cases of ongoing seismic activity in the area of the city of Shigatse were tremors with a magnitude of less than 3.0. The strongest of them reached a magnitude of 4.4.
The earthquake in TAR occurred on the morning of January 7. Seismic activity led to the destruction of many residential buildings and infrastructure facilities. More than 400 military personnel are taking part in search and rescue operations. People have been evacuated from the disaster area. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered that maximum efforts be made to eliminate the consequences.
According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred on the border of China with Nepal was 7.1. Its epicenter was located 163 km southwest of Shigatse with a population of about 80 thousand people, the center was located at a depth of 10 km. According to the Russian Embassy in Beijing, there was no information about Russians in the seismic activity zone. According to official statistics, at least 126 people died, another 188 were injured.
