Denmark tightens controls on tankers carrying oil in Danish Straits

The Danish Maritime Authority is stepping up measures to ensure that tankers in the Port of Skagen comply with maritime safety, environmental protection and seafarer protection regulations, the agency said in a press release.

These measures are being taken in response to the active traffic of old oil tankers passing through the Danish Straits between the Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas, connecting the Baltic Sea with the North Sea, and “creating risks to maritime safety, the environment and the seafarers themselves.”

The press release also says that the Danish Maritime Authority carries out port state control for ships anchored in Skagen that cannot be considered safe to pass through the country’s waters. Since tankers are considered high-risk vessels, the port authority pays special attention to the issue of port control and gives priority to this type of vessel, the press release says.
