German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized the US and Israeli attack on Iran, calling it a violation of international law.
“Our foreign policy will not be more convincing if we do not call a violation of international law a violation of international law,” the head of state said at an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the re-establishment of the German Foreign Ministry after World War II.
“This war violates international law. There can be no doubt about that,” Steinmeier said. However, the president took a different position than the German government, which has so far avoided assessing the US and Israeli strikes from an international perspective. Chancellor Friedrich Merz merely acknowledged that the attack on Iran presented German authorities with a dilemma.
