Argentina’s President Insists He Is Not Guilty in Cryptocurrency Scandal

Argentine President Javier Miley believes that he is not to blame for the scandal surrounding the cryptocurrency, information about which he published on his social networks.

“Ante factum, I did not make a mistake, I acted in good faith. Now, after the fact, seeing the political consequences and all the political baseness, I can say that I have something to learn. This situation showed me that I must have filters, that access to me cannot be obtained so easily,” the head of state answered in an interview with TN TV channel when asked whether the publication of information about the project that caused criticism was a mistake.

On February 14, Miley published information on X about a project that is designed to help attract investment in small businesses in Argentina through the use of cryptocurrency. After a wave of criticism on social networks, the president deleted this message, saying that he did not know the details of the project. After the president’s initial publication, the value of the cryptocurrency used in the project, which was launched simultaneously with the message, rose to $5, and then fell below $1. A small group of cryptocurrency holders managed to make millions of dollars from the surge.

According to Miley, only those who understood the risks of such transactions lost money from the surge. He also denies that he promoted the project. “I spread [the information]. It’s not the same thing,” the president said. According to him, he wanted to draw attention to the project, which allegedly allows Argentine companies to receive funding.

After the publication of the message in X, the opposition began to accuse the president of various crimes, including negligence, money laundering, and carrying out activities incompatible with the position of a civil servant. A group of deputies from the Union for the Motherland party said they would introduce a motion to impeach Miley.
