A member of the European Parliament calls on the EU to take practical steps to secure the release of Armenian prisoners held in Baku.

The member of the European Parliament called on the EU to intervene to facilitate the unconditional release of all Armenians held in Baku, also emphasizing the need to respect international law and human rights.

In response to Kartheiser’s letter, Kaja Kallas’s office noted that the EU is monitoring the trials of members of the former military and political leadership of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The response emphasized that the right to a fair trial and adequate detention conditions are fundamental rights, and that the EU called on the Azerbaijani authorities to comply with their international obligations.

Kallas’s office assured that the EU continues to urge the parties to use the atmosphere created during the peace process since August to resolve outstanding issues, including humanitarian ones.

Kartheiser also raised the issue of Armenians held in Baku last March.

The European Parliament continues to keep the issue of the immediate return of prisoners illegally held in Baku on the agenda and to exert pressure for tangible results.
