Yerevan’s current actions do not contradict its commitments within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was stated by Mikhail Aghasandyan, Director of the First Department for CIS Countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry, to TASS.
He noted that so far Armenia’s statements about its intention to join the European Union are only “political declarations.”
“At the same time, it has been repeatedly emphasized, including by Overchuk, that being a member of two associations at the same time is impossible, given their nature,” Aghasandyan noted.
“Currently, Armenia’s actions do not contradict its commitments within the EAEU. We will continue to follow practical steps. No one forbids Armenia from cooperating with other countries. All EAEU members do this. The main thing is that such cooperation does not contradict its commitments within the Union. So far, this is not the case.”
According to the diplomat, the nature of Armenia’s participation in the union has not changed and remains constructive. The country “is actively working in the EAEU and sees benefits from its participation.”
“Yes, trade has decreased, but this is an unstable situation. Previously, there was growth, but now everything is returning to a more normal course.
If we look at the dynamics of recent years, since Armenia’s accession to the EAEU in 2015, its trade with partners has grown sharply.”
