Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has suggested holding a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Vienna during the online summit of the 27 heads of state and government of the European Union on Tuesday, Die Presse reports.
“Our capital has a long tradition as a place for dialogue, and given that international organizations, in particular the OSCE, are based here, excellent conditions are created here,” the Chancellor said.
Responding to a question about the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Putin, the Chancellor explained: “The question of the participation in possible peace talks of those individuals for whom the ICC has issued an arrest warrant must be clarified in advance in consultations with the court. If the talks take place in Vienna, we will contact the ICC on the basis of our agreements with international organizations regarding our headquarters in Vienna in order to ensure the participation of President Putin.”
Earlier, the media reported that a number of countries were ready to host a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. In particular, Switzerland, Hungary and Belarus were discussed, and the Russian president even proposed holding the meeting in Moscow.
