Azerbaijan May Join Abraham Accords Given Close Cooperation with Israel. US Plays Active Role in Process. Media

Amid diplomatic discussions on expanding the Abraham Accords, a political source told Israel’s Channel 7 that Azerbaijan may join the accords given its extensive cooperation with Israel.

According to the source, the path to achieving this goal, among other things, is through a rapprochement program between the US and Azerbaijan.

During a hearing of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee this week, Republican Senator Steve Daines spoke about his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the diplomatic and energy ties between Azerbaijan and Israel. During the discussion, Daines mentioned the gas deal between Azerbaijan’s state-owned SOCAR and Israel, noting that it would enhance energy security. Daines added that he also met with Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan George Deek in Baku and was impressed by the historic depth of cooperation between Baku and Tel Aviv.

Former US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro explained at the same hearing why Azerbaijan has the potential to join the Abraham Accords.

“Sometimes people ask: how can we expand the Abraham Accords? Maybe Azerbaijan? Azerbaijan has had diplomatic relations with Israel for many years and is one of the leading Muslim countries that maintained these ties long before the Abraham Accords were signed. The strategic importance of joining them is truly undeniable,” Shapiro said.

At the same time, the source claims that there is a rapprochement between the presidents of the United States and Azerbaijan.

This week, US President Donald Trump posted a video of a speech by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the social network Truth, in which Aliyev praised his American counterpart for being the only US president who does not start wars. It is noted that this is the first time that Trump has posted a speech by a foreign president on his social network. This is an unusual move, indicating a special connection between the two leaders.

Behind the scenes, relations between Washington and Baku have been warming for some time. In the first half of 2025, trade turnover between the countries amounted to almost $600 million, up 36% from the previous year.

It is noted that as the US administration reassesses its influence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Azerbaijan is strengthening its position and continues to position itself not only as a partner of Israel, but also as a player in the new geopolitical arena.
