The mausoleum of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, was set on fire in his hometown of Qardaha, AFP reports. Media outlets captured footage of opposition fighters in military uniform and young people watching the arson.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also told AFP that militants set fire to the mausoleum. It was located in Latakia, home to Assad’s Alawite community.
