EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the European Union was created to take advantage of the United States. “Europe is a peace project. It was created so that there would be no wars between members of the European Union, and there really weren’t any,” she said on CBS television when asked to comment on Trump’s statement. The head of European diplomacy called the EU “a good project for transatlantic relations” and stressed that she was “very surprised” by the American leader’s words.
Kallas agreed that the statements by the head of the US administration demonstrate quite high tensions in relations between Brussels and Washington.
Earlier, Trump expressed the opinion that the EU was formed to take advantage of the United States.
