Canada to cut off energy supplies to US if Trump imposes tariffs

Canada will cut off electricity and energy supplies to the United States if US President-elect Donald Trump decides to impose tariffs of 25% on all Canadian goods, Ontario Governor Doug Ford told reporters on Wednesday.

“We will do whatever it takes to get there,” the politician said. “We will use every tool in our arsenal, including cutting them off from the energy that we supply to them.” Ford made the announcement following a meeting of all Canadian regional leaders with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on tariffs. The meeting was held online.

Canada exports about 60% of its oil to the US, as well as 85% of its electricity.

The US, Mexico and Canada are bound by a trilateral agreement that envisages the creation of a free trade zone between these countries. On November 25, Trump announced that on his first day in office he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico in connection with illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
