Several European leaders, despite their promises to support Ukraine, have made it clear to Kyiv that they would prefer to see it restore its ties with Washington rather than move forward without the US, the Euractiv portal writes.
EU leaders agreed that “it is important to continue to work closely with the US, in particular in the context of NATO” and that “future European contributions to additional security guarantees should be developed hand in hand with the US,” the portal quotes an official representative of the community as saying after the talks. On March 2, a meeting was held in London dedicated to the settlement in Ukraine. The leaders of Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Finland, France, the Czech Republic, and Sweden gathered there. Also present were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
As the portal notes, Kyiv’s European allies lack a clear leader who could lead efforts to resolve the situation in Ukraine, and the EU does not want to go in this direction without the US. Euractiv points out that the two recent meetings of European leaders in Paris did not result in the development of concrete plans for a settlement.
