Georgia adopts law to strip former president of state security

The Georgian Parliament adopted a law in its third and final reading at a plenary session that will strip the president of his state security after his term expires if the Constitutional Court finds that he violated the constitution while in office. The vote was broadcast live on the website of the legislative body.

85 deputies voted for the law. At least 76 votes were needed to pass it. The changes will be included in the law “On the Special State Security Service”.

According to the current legislation, the President of Georgia, the Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the Parliament have the right to use state security for another year after their term expires. If it is established that a former official is in danger, the term of state security may be extended.
