Greece’s most popular ski resort closed due to heavy snowfall

Greek traffic police have warned drivers in areas with ice and snow to use snow chains after long traffic jams were reported near some ski resorts as cars became stuck on the roads, the Associated Press reported.

Police on Thursday warned drivers not to head to the country’s most popular ski resort on Mount Parnassus as the resort itself is closed due to bad weather and snowfall has closed access roads to the top of Mount Parnitha on the outskirts of Athens.

On Christmas Day, authorities said the roughly 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) traffic jam near the Parnassus ski resort was caused by some electric cars breaking down on the road down the mountain from the resort and others getting stuck on the snowy road because they were not equipped with snow chains or winter tires.

“We remind drivers of their obligation to equip their vehicles with snow chains and to use them in areas where there is snow or ice on the roads,” the police said in a statement.

Mountainous areas of Greece often experience snowfall during the winter months. From Friday, another cold front is forecast for Greece with heavy rainfall, gale force winds and snowfalls in many mountainous areas.
