Dear friends,
Very often we talk about the ecological catastrophe of Yerevan, and you often ask how we can solve this escalating problem.
I would like to present you with my ideas: a very simple program, which is a roadmap for the ecological revival of Yerevan, based on political, strategic and applicable solutions based on international best practices.
At the same time, let me remind you that since 2018, Armenia’s public debt has increased by more than $ 7 billion, but no tangible reforms have been implemented in the city with this money. Instead, environmental problems have worsened.
Yerevan is on the brink of an ecological catastrophe.
Air pollution, high dust levels, destruction of green spaces and an outdated vehicle fleet seriously threaten the health and quality of life of Yerevan residents.
It is time to act. Now we need to return Yerevan to its healthy, vibrant and prosperous image, taking as our guide the best examples of urban development in Zurich, Oslo, Vancouver and Singapore.
Steps for the ecological revival of Yerevan
1. Systematic street cleaning and operation of irrigation systems.
• Daily cleaning and dust control with vacuum and high pressure.
• At least 25-30 modern vehicles must be purchased.
• Cost: 2,000,000 US dollars
2. Large-scale greening
• Planting trees: in courtyards, along roads and on hills.
• “Green roofs” and “green walls” – like in Singapore.
• Cost: 5,128,205 US dollars
3. Fight against construction dust
• Strict standards for construction sites: irrigation, dust suppression.
• Municipal supervision.
• Cost: minimal or zero (requires legal regulation)
4. Control of quarries and concrete products
• Mandatory: closed areas, monitoring, irrigation, dust absorption.
• Cost: at the expense of producers, zero from the state budget
5. Fleet modernization
• Make the city center an environmentally friendly zone.
• Ban cars below Euro 5.
• Purchase 100 electric buses.
• Cost: 12,820,512 US dollars
6. Air quality monitoring
• Install at least 50 measuring stations.
• Data is publicly available.
• Cost: $100,000
Summary of total expenses (for 2 years)
Street cleaning and equipment $2,000,000
Large-scale landscaping $5,128,205
Purchase of electric buses and traffic regulation $12,820,512
Air quality monitoring $100,000
Construction site supervision Minimal or none
Total $20,048,717
Yerevan cannot wait any longer. The ecological restoration of the city must become a priority of state and public policy. A new quality of governance is needed, focused not on profit, but on responsibility for the lives and health of Yerevan residents.
Environmental protection begins with decisions, not empty words.
PS: These expenses amount to only $10,000,000 per year, while the external debt has increased by about $7 billion during the KP rule. If this money were used effectively, then with such large expenditures it would be possible to restore and maintain Yerevan for 700 years.
