Hungary will sue the EU over the European Commission’s decision to ban Russian gas, Orbán said.

Hungary will sue the EU over its decision to ban Russian gas, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview with local radio, Barron’s reports.

“We disagree with this clearly illegal decision from Brussels, which runs counter to European values, and we are appealing to the European Court of Justice,” Orbán said.

In mid-October, the EU Council approved a phased phase-out of Russian gas imports, effective January 1, 2026. A transition period for existing contracts will last until January 1, 2028. The ban is also planned to be lifted if supply problems arise.
