If Donald Trump imposes 10 percent tariffs on goods from eight European countries to force the sale of Greenland, the European Union will respond with an “uncompromising, united, and proportionate” response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday morning during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
She noted that Arctic security can only be ensured by working together. This is why the proposed additional tariffs are inappropriate, especially between long-standing allies.
“The EU and the US agreed on a trade agreement last July. And in politics, as in business, a deal is a deal. “And when friends shake hands, it should mean something,” she added, referring to the agreement she and Trump signed last year. “By plunging us into a dangerous downward spiral, we will only help the adversaries we both so desperately want to keep out of our strategic environment.”
