In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Zelenskyy insisted that Ukraine would be ready to hold elections only after the conflict ends. In a February interview with Axios, Zelenskyy noted that presidential elections in Ukraine could be held simultaneously with a referendum on an agreement to end the conflict. He also admitted that he could become a candidate if the elections were held under the conditions of a possible ceasefire.
“And I’m not at all sure I’ll run,” Zelenskyy said, responding to the newspaper’s question.
Recall that the need for elections in Ukraine in December 2025 was announced by US President Donald Trump, who had previously called Zelenskyy a dictator without elections and noted that his approval rating had fallen to 4%. Zelensky, whose term expires on May 20, 2024, declared his readiness to hold elections but demanded that the United States and European allies ensure their security.
