Iranian FM warns of risk of undermining trust in UN

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has warned that the continued inaction and passivity of the United Nations (UN) “in the face of the Israeli regime’s genocide and large-scale aggression” will further undermine the credibility of the world body, Mehr reports.

Araqchi made the warning in his speech ahead of a virtual extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of the United Nations Charter to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

He outlined Iran’s position on the latest developments in the West Asian region and called on the international community to prevent Israel’s violations of the law and aggression from becoming a norm.

“A single UN member is undermining the effectiveness of the UN system by flagrantly violating the principles and norms of international law, including the UN Charter,” a senior Iranian diplomat said.

Araghchi described Israel’s 14-month actions in Gaza as “a continuation of the 80-year plan of colonial destruction of Palestine, which manifests itself in the intensification of the occupation of Palestinian lands and the establishment of apartheid against the people under occupation.” According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, “a global coalition is needed to hold Israel accountable and prosecute its leaders in order to stop the regime’s genocide in Gaza and its aggression against Lebanon.” Araghchi also called for sanctions against Israel’s military, financial and political supporters, especially the United States.
