Iran’s ambassador has been expelled from Australia over “credible intelligence” linking Tehran to a series of anti-Semitic attacks in Australia. The Australian intelligence agency has said Iran was behind the incidents, including the arson attack on Melbourne’s Adas Israel synagogue.
The country’s National Intelligence Agency has said Iran has carried out at least two attacks on Australia’s Jewish community, prompting Prime Minister Albanese’s government to expel Tehran’s ambassador from Canberra, The Guardian reports.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australian intelligence services have found links between Iran and attacks on a Sydney restaurant and a Melbourne synagogue.
ASIO chief executive Mike Burgess said the attacks were carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) through a network of “layered proxies” – paid intermediaries based in Australia.
The IRGC is to be listed as a terrorist organisation in Australia, with new laws set to be considered by federal parliament.
