Kremlin reports Putin’s phone conversation with Syrian president

A telephone conversation took place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the President of the interim period of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Kremlin press service reported.

According to the report, Vladimir Putin wished Ahmed al-Sharaa success in solving the tasks facing the new leadership of the country for the benefit of the Syrian people, with whom Russia has historically had friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation.

“A detailed exchange of opinions was held on the current situation in Syria. The Russian side emphasized its principled position in support of the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state. In this regard, the importance of implementing a set of measures for sustainable normalization in the country, intensifying the inter-Syrian dialogue with the participation of leading political forces and ethno-confessional groups of the population was emphasized. Vladimir Putin confirmed Russia’s continued readiness to help improve the socio-economic situation in Syria, including providing humanitarian aid to its residents.

A number of topical issues of practical cooperation in trade, economic, educational and other areas were touched upon, in particular taking into account the recent negotiations in Damascus of the Russian interdepartmental delegation. It was agreed to continue such useful contacts to develop a broad agenda for the development of bilateral cooperation,” the statement says.

The telephone conversation between the leaders was constructive, businesslike and substantive, the Kremlin reports.
