US President Donald Trump has destroyed the alliance of Western countries by opening a peace talk with Russia in Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by the French newspaper Le Monde, commenting on the telephone conversation between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin that took place the day before.
“Without consulting with European leaders, the American president had a detailed conversation with the Russian president on Wednesday,” the article says. According to the newspaper, “Washington is thus declaring open the peace talks [on Ukraine], which have been the focus of confidential exchanges for weeks.” With “such an individual demarche,” Trump has destroyed the common front that Western countries have been presenting since the start of the fighting, Le Monde believes. “The new American president is not giving Europeans any place in the negotiations,” the newspaper stated.
The approach to the events in Ukraine that Trump showed in his telephone conversation with Putin is “full of meaning,” Le Monde noted.
