Madagascar’s exiled president dissolved parliament

Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina announced the dissolution of parliament on October 14. The exiled president had previously refused to resign.
Rajoelina published the decree on Facebook, stating that he had consulted with the heads of the National Assembly and the Senate. According to Reuters, it is not yet clear whether the decree is legally binding.

Protesters, primarily young people from Generation Z, have been demanding the president’s resignation for several weeks. Many members of the military have also joined the protesters.

The opposition is attempting to gather enough signatures to initiate impeachment proceedings in parliament.
