German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised to continue supporting Ukraine, “even in the face of pressure from the left and the pro-Russian right.”
In a stern warning to Moscow, he noted that “the diplomatic means of diplomacy have been exhausted.” “When a criminal regime openly questions the right of another country to exist by military force and aims to destroy the political order of freedom on the entire European continent, the federal government that I lead will do everything possible to prevent this,” he said in a speech in the Bundestag.
Merz also stressed that the German army, the Bundeswehr, “must quickly receive everything it needs to defend Germany,” promising to speed up legislative procedures and arms procurement.
Reporting on his recent participation in EU and NATO summits, he said that Germany “has once again become visible and, above all, is once again taken seriously throughout the world.”
