The third president of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, insists that his position isn’t the most precious thing to him, and he resigned in 2018 because he had something more important to focus on.
“There was another way of thinking, wasn’t there? Well, if that’s what many people wanted, and by that time the population had grown sufficiently, let them come and govern themselves. Who could have imagined that we could have a situation like today? Who could have thought, deep down, that we could capitulate? Who could have imagined that these people would question the Genocide? Who could have imagined that we needed to change the Constitution to forget about Ararat, to forget about the Declaration of Independence. If there is someone, let them speak up,” he said in an interview with the “Imnemnim” podcast.
President Sargsyan emphasized that what happened is a catastrophe, and we don’t yet know what will happen next.
“If you ask me directly: if you knew this would happen, what would you do? I would say: everything, but my goal wasn’t to retain power,” the president noted.
When asked what’s most important to him, Serzh Sargsyan replied: “Artsakh.”
“Not because I was born in Artsakh, but because I was deeply convinced that without Artsakh, Armenia’s role in this region would be close to zero. In other words, have we seen this at least in practice?” the third president of the Republic of Armenia emphasized.
