German opposition leader and chancellor contender Friedrich Merz plans to meet US Vice President J.D. Vance for bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Reuters reported, citing a party source.
In addition to Vance, Merz will also hold bilateral talks with senior officials including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas.
Merz’s conservative bloc is leading in the polls, with surveys suggesting it could win twice as many votes as Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats.
