Removing the Declaration from the Preamble of the Constitution means that they are trying to deprive us not only of the past, but also of the future. David Ananyan

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia.

35 years ago, our people proclaimed their right to independence, based on the principle of free self-determination, restoration of historical justice and the aspirations of all Armenians. The Declaration became the cornerstone of our statehood, defining the path to Armenia’s independence, a solid foundation for national identity and sovereignty. Former Chairman of the State Revenue Committee of the Republic of Armenia David Ananyan wrote about this.

“Today, our enemies demand to remove the Declaration from the Preamble of the Constitution, seeking to deal a direct blow to our identity, our historical continuity and the foundations of statehood. Removing the Declaration means that they are trying to deprive us not only of the past, but also of the future.

The Declaration is a political document of our existence, it links the independence of 1918 and 1990, Artsakh and Armenia, the Diaspora and the Homeland. This is a real formula, which asserts that the Republic of Armenia was not created by chance, but as a result of historical justice and a thousand-year struggle. To reject the Declaration means to break this most important connection and undermine the roots of our statehood.

Today, more than ever, we are obliged to protect the Declaration as the most important guarantee of our historical memory, our sovereignty and our future.

The Declaration is our oath. The Declaration is the living foundation of our statehood. By protecting the Declaration, we protect our future,” he wrote.
