Reuters: Trump wants to buy Greenland to strengthen influence in the Western Hemisphere

US President-elect Donald Trump is serious about acquiring Greenland, including to expand the United States’ sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere, Reuters reported, citing sources.

According to one of them, Trump is unlikely to resort to military force to gain control of Greenland. However, Reuters’ sources note that Trump is planning to use other means, such as diplomatic or economic pressure on Denmark. One of Trump’s associates claims to have seen a list of foreign policy priorities compiled by senior Trump officials after his victory in the November 5 presidential election. One of the items on the list was “buying Greenland,” he said.

The president-elect is also interested in expanding the territory as a means of creating a legacy that will be remembered for generations, according to three current and former Trump aides familiar with the discussions. “The real legacy is to expand the territory of the United States,” one of the sources said.

While Trump briefly mentioned the possibility of acquiring Greenland during his first term, his recent comments underscore that his desire is a deep-seated aspiration, not a passing fancy, the agency writes.
