The European Union is set to impose a sanctions package against Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia. The bloc intends to approve this move when EU leaders gather for a summit in Brussels later this month, according to Bloomberg.
The first package of measures will target about a dozen individuals and entities, including engineering, metallurgical, and aviation companies.
The EU restrictions will be the first response to the missile supply, with additional lists currently under consideration.
EU sanctions require the support of all member states, and plans may change before they are implemented.
According to assessments from the United States and Europe, Iran supplied ballistic missiles to Russia last month, prompting the U.S., Germany, France, and the UK to impose sanctions. Throughout Russia’s 2.5-year war against Ukraine, Iran has simultaneously provided Moscow with hundreds of offensive drones and other weapons, but the transfer of ballistic missiles indicates a deeper involvement in the conflict.
British intelligence has reported that Moscow has received Fath-360 missiles, capable of hitting targets at a range of 120 kilometers. With such armaments, Russia will be able to strike military and civilian facilities located near the front lines. At the same time, the adversary will be able to utilize domestically produced missiles with greater range.
