The President of the Republic of Armenia refused to appoint Vazgen Tigran Sahakyan as a judge and filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court.

On March 12, the Constitutional Council submitted a proposal to the President of the Republic of Armenia to appoint Vazgen Sahakyan as a judge of the Syunik Regional Court of General Jurisdiction. However, the President of the Republic of Armenia did not sign the appointment decree and filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, challenging the constitutionality of this decision.

According to some reports, the candidate’s impeccable reputation was not highly regarded, but the Constitutional Council nominated his candidacy without providing a compelling justification.

Pastinfo will attempt to obtain clarification from the Administration of the President of the Republic of Armenia through a written request. We would like to note that the Constitutional Court has accepted the application for review. Today, March 31, the written hearing of the case was scheduled to begin, with Judge Edgar Shatiryan serving as the rapporteur. The defendant was the Constitutional Council. One of the Constitutional Court judges, David Khachaturyan, a former member of the Constitutional Council, withdrew from the hearing. The Constitutional Court also requested documents from the president and the Constitutional Council by procedural decision.
According to information available from the list of judicial candidates, 37-year-old Vazgen Sahakyan is unemployed.
