The Prosecutor General of Armenia did not answer the awkward question of the opposition MP

According to official statements by the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office, Baku has declared about 300 Armenians wanted. This was stated by opposition MP Taguhi Tovmasyan at a session of the National Assembly during the discussion of the report on the results of the Prosecutor General’s Office’s activities for 2024 on May 8.

In addition, as the MP noted, several dozen Armenian prisoners continue to be held in Azerbaijan. At the same time, she called their presence there illegal and politically motivated. The oppositionist called the court decisions made against these persons biased and politically motivated.

“What is the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia doing to ensure legal balance?” Tovmasyan asked the republic’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan. In particular, she recalled that during periods of escalation or resumption of the active phase of military actions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia periodically made statements about initiating certain criminal cases against Azerbaijan and its citizens. In response to this, Vardapetyan stated that these criminal cases are “protected by a secrecy regime.” “The Law on Freedom of Information does not provide the opportunity to transfer the information we have,” the Prosecutor General explained, pointing to the cases mentioned by the deputy. According to her, Tovmasyan has repeatedly addressed them with a corresponding request. However, Vardapetyan, even with a strong desire, cannot voice any details, since she is limited by the norms of the current legislation. Thus, the Prosecutor General, in fact, did not answer the uncomfortable question.
