Iran has always emphasized its sensitivity to the presence and interference of extra-regional players in the South Caucasus. This was stated by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, as reported by Tasnim.
“The planned cooperation with American companies will be carried out exclusively through a company registered in Armenia and in accordance with the domestic legislation of this country. The joint statement of the two countries also emphasizes the need to preserve national sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders,” Baghaei said.
He stressed that the unblocking and creation of transport and communication routes, including the railway line passing through southern Armenia and connecting Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, should not violate internationally recognized borders, contradict the sovereignty of Armenia or lead to a change in the geopolitics of the region.
“Iran is closely monitoring the situation and, if necessary, will express its concerns to the countries of the region in order to prevent any extra-regional interference that could harm the peace, stability and security of the South Caucasus,” Bahai said.
