The Syrian President announced progress in negotiations with Israel.

A final agreement is only possible if Israel returns to the borders that existed before December 8, the day the Bashar al-Assad regime was overthrown, said Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to The Washington Post.

“Israel has always stated that it is concerned about the situation in Syria, as it fears threats from Iranian armed groups and Hezbollah. We ourselves expelled these forces from Syria,” al-Sharaa emphasized.

The Syrian leader also noted the need for Russia’s support as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

“We need their voice on our side on a number of issues, and we have strategic interests with them. We do not want to push Russia into making alternative decisions on Syria,” al-Sharaa emphasized.

Al-Sharaa added that the country is at the beginning of its journey following political change and reserves the right to hold ousted President Bashar al-Assad, who now resides in Russia, accountable.
