The US federal government has shut down for the first time in six years after the Senate failed to pass a budget bill for the fiscal year, BBC News reports.
President Trump previously stated that he would not rule out a shutdown if Republicans and Democrats fail to reach an agreement.
During the shutdown, most government work and programs will be suspended, some government employees will be furloughed, and others will continue to work without pay.
Republicans and Democrats are blaming each other for the failure of the bill, which required the support of 60 of the 100 senators to pass.
