The US executive authorities are stopping funding the American newspapers Politico, The New York Times and the Associated Press news agency. This was announced in X by Elon Musk, who heads the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In all cases, we are talking about the payment of expensive subscriptions to the services of these media outlets by various US government departments. According to Musk, the State Department stopped paying the Associated Press, the Treasury stopped paying for a subscription to The New York Times, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) refused Politico services.
As White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said on Wednesday, the US government will cancel subscriptions to Politico worth about $8 million per year. She noted that Politico was essentially subsidized by American taxpayers, and the DOGE team has already begun work on canceling payments to the newspaper. Now Musk’s department has begun an audit of the spending of US federal agencies on subscriptions to other media outlets. He had previously spoken out sharply against the practice of funding the media with public funds.
Trump appointed Musk to head an agency called DOGE. As NBC News previously clarified, despite its name, DOGE will not be a full-fledged department within the federal government – the creation of such an agency requires approval from Congress. Trump said that DOGE “will provide outside advice and guidance.”
