The World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses deep concern over recent developments concerning the Armenian Apostolic Church in Armenia, including the actions of law enforcement agencies in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the detention of high-ranking clergy.
The Armenian Apostolic Church occupies a special and honorable place in the spiritual, cultural and historical life of the Armenian people. It is also an integral and indispensable member of the worldwide Christian family and makes a major contribution to the ecumenical movement and the common witness of the Church throughout the world.
Reports of the use of force against holy sites and the detention of clergy raise serious concerns regarding the protection of religious freedom, the sanctity of worship and the autonomy of religious institutions.
We are also aware of the impact that public rhetoric can have in times of regional tension. Statements that are perceived as hostile or derogatory towards religious communities risk deepening societal divisions at a time when unity and understanding are needed more than ever.
In this context, the WCC respectfully calls on the Government of Armenia to:
Ensure the protection, dignity and legitimate rights of all religious leaders and institutions.
Refrain from actions or statements that could be interpreted as directed against religious institutions or as inciting public hostility.
Respect the principles of religious freedom, due process and the peaceful expression of faith.
Encourage open and constructive dialogue between state institutions and religious communities.
The World Council of Churches stands with the Armenian Apostolic Church, whose historical witness and enduring role have long contributed greatly to the spiritual life and strengthening of both the Armenian people and the global Christian community. We continue to pray for the wisdom and insight of Armenia’s leaders, for the well-being of the clergy and faithful, and for solutions to current challenges based on justice, peace, and respect for all.
At this critical moment, we call on all stakeholders to act responsibly, sensitively, and with a commitment to values that promote dignity, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.
