Trump asks to close 2020 election interference case

US President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow filed a motion Wednesday with the Georgia Court of Appeals to dismiss the 2020 presidential election interference case, citing presidential immunity.

As noted in the document, “On November 5, 2024, Donald Trump was re-elected President and will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025,” and “the incumbent President is fully immune from any charges and prosecutions at both the federal and state levels.” In August 2023, more jurors in Georgia indicted Trump, some of his lawyers, associates, campaign staff, and local Republican Party officials on charges of election interference in 2020. The indictment alleges that Trump, as part of a criminal group, was making efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The indictment alleges that the group operated in Georgia, as well as other states – Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
