US President Donald Trump is demanding a complete ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. But it’s difficult, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said.
Journalists asked Levitt to elaborate on Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Vatican. In particular, whether the meeting changed the situation around the negotiations.
“The president himself said this after the meeting yesterday, when he answered reporters’ questions on Air Force One. He feels increasingly disillusioned with the leaders of both countries. He wants to achieve a permanent ceasefire,” Levitt said.
She also drew attention to the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary ceasefire today.
“President Trump has made it clear that he wants a permanent ceasefire. First and foremost, to stop the killing, to stop the bloodshed, and while he remains optimistic about reaching an agreement, he is also realistic,” she said.
According to her, Trump’s meeting with Zelensky shows that he is putting a lot of effort and time into the truce. Because Trump wants to be a “peacemaker president,” as he was in his first term.
