Ursula von der Leyen’s calls for additional funding for Kyiv are like trying to cure an alcoholic, Orbán believes.

Amid the corruption scandal in Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s calls for additional funding for Kyiv are like trying to cure an alcoholic with a can of vodka. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote about this on the social media platform X.

Orbán noted that on November 17, he received a letter from von der Leyen stating that Ukraine was experiencing a funding shortfall and asking EU member states to allocate more funds to Kyiv.

“This is astonishing. At a time when it has become clear that the military mafia is gobbling up European taxpayers’ money, the President of the European Commission is proposing to channel additional funds there instead of demanding real oversight or a suspension of payments,” Orbán added.

The European Commission previously sent a letter to EU countries containing formal proposals for a loan financed by Russian assets and two alternative financing options for Ukraine.

The letter states that three options are being proposed to meet Ukraine’s financial needs. One is a program called a “compensatory loan” using frozen Russian assets. The second option involves direct grants from EU countries. The third option is a general loan at the EU level.
