The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a nearly $900 billion defense spending bill for 2026 (beginning October 1), including $400 million in aid to Ukraine, the TASS news agency reported this month.
The bill was supported by 231 lawmakers, 196 opposed. The lower house of Congress was largely divided along party lines. Seventeen lawmakers from the US Democratic Party, which currently holds a minority in the House, supported the bill, and only four Republicans (the majority faction) did not vote for it.
The bill includes a provision providing $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. These funds are to be provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). It provides for the US Department of Defense to enter into contracts with manufacturers, rather than directly supply certain equipment and means from the American arsenal.
Lawmakers also included a provision requiring the Department of Defense (Pentagon) to notify them if the US administration decides to cancel or suspend assistance to Ukraine previously approved by Congress.
