The US State Department has responded to reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump has submitted a proposal to Armenia and Azerbaijan to lift the blockade of communications in the South Caucasus.
In response to a request from Armenpress, the press service of the US State Department said that it had no information about these reports published in the press.
“The United States supports efforts aimed at strengthening peace and stability in the South Caucasus. We have no information that we could provide regarding these press reports,” the State Department press service representative said in response.
Earlier, Carnegie Endowment analyst Olesya Vardanyan, citing two foreign diplomats, noted that the administration of US President Donald Trump had submitted a proposal to Yerevan and Baku to build a road connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan through the territory of Armenia.
According to these sources, the American proposal is similar to a version circulated by the European Union several years ago, based on a plan agreed between Russia and Georgia after the 2008 war. According to it, the parties planned to hand over the management of routes through the disputed regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to an independent Swiss company, which would then undertake to share logistics data with all interested parties.
