The office of US Vice President J.D. Vance has announced that a post published on X and later deleted, describing the 1915 mass killings of Armenians as genocide, was “made in error” by a staff member. The post included a photo of Vance and his wife at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial.
According to the clarification, the post was made in error by a staff member who is not part of the US delegation.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt noted that there has been no change in US policy.
Recall that in 2021, Joe Biden became the first US president to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, which caused discontent in Turkey.
Responding to reporters’ questions in Yerevan, Vance did not clarify whether he recognized the genocide, noting that he made the visit at the request of Armenians and as a sign of respect for the victims and the Armenian government.
