Finally, Armenia claims to be a candidate for EU membership, we must also pay attention to internal problems. This was stated by Nacho Sanchez Amor, a Spanish member of the European Parliament, permanent rapporteur on Turkey, during a session of the Euronest PA Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy.
According to him, this is not about opening the border with Turkey.
“But what happens at the rallies in Armenia: I have not come to judge you, but 20-40 police officers are detaining people. If, for example, it is for a bribe, it is different, but when they judge for an opinion, for an opinion expressed on social networks, be careful, be careful, this is unacceptable,” he noted.
“That people can be arrested for writing something on social networks, this is already a method. In a democracy, you can’t even imprison a person for their opinion, for example, let’s go to Istanbul. You shouldn’t send the police. Of course, the person should appear in court, but you shouldn’t condemn and conclude that he is a dangerous person, based only on his murder. The Armenian authorities should be attentive to these issues, if you claim to be an EU candidate country,” the MP said.
“First let’s send him to prison, then let’s see what happens. Be aware of such cases, because we have studied these cases very deeply,” he added.
