The US Army (ground forces) intends to significantly increase the use of drones. This was reported on Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the newspaper, the Pentagon expects to equip each division with approximately 1,000 drones and thereby get rid of obsolete weapons. The reason for this decision lies in the US military’s analysis of the conflict in Ukraine. As the publication writes, citing the opinion of military analysts, drones have changed the format of military operations, since they are capable of not only helping to overcome enemy defenses, but also better detecting hidden enemy positions.
In addition, the US intends to improve the equipment of troops with tablets and ensure their connection to the Internet, as well as invest about $3 billion in the development of technologies to combat enemy drones. The total amount of rearmament of American troops is estimated at $36 billion. The US Army intends to receive such funds, including by abandoning obsolete weapons, but such measures will require the approval of Congress. The Army Transformation Initiative was approved earlier this week by Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, the publication notes.
The US military wants to fully implement the plan to equip the ground forces with drones within two years.
