India has called for Pakistan’s nuclear weapons to be placed under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The statement was made by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in a speech in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I believe Pakistan’s nuclear weapons should be placed under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” he said, questioning the safety of the neighboring country’s nuclear arsenal.
Ties between Pakistan and India have been strained since the April 22 terrorist attack by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 25 Indian citizens and one Nepali. New Delhi has accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of involvement in the attack. India and Pakistan imposed mutual restrictions, suspended bilateral agreements and closed each other’s airspace.
On the night of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, striking targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir where terrorists were based. Pakistan retaliated. On May 10, India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire.
