Trump and his wife, Melania, met with Emperor Naruhito in 2019, becoming the first foreign dignitaries to receive this honor.
Naruhito ascended the throne on May 1, 2019, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito, due to ill health and advanced age. He was 85 years old at the time. He had been on the throne since 1989, becoming the first emperor to abdicate in 200 years. His son, Naruhito, is now 65.
