The evening of September 15 was not just another performance day in the theater life of Yerevan. The newly established Armenian and Russian Modern Drama Theater confirmed its presence for the first time in the hall of the Union of Theater Workers of Armenia. The first step of the new stage was made with Alexander Volodin's one-act comedy "The Barber's 7 Wives", but the meaning of that evening was much wider than the premiere of one play. It was the opening of a new theatrical path. The theater was formed at the acting school of Galya Novents under the leadership of Hakob Ghazanchyan. The newly created theater group cooperates with "Dialog" NGO. And from the very first evening, it became clear that it is not only about performances. It is about the creation of a new platform for young actors, modern dramaturgy, theater education and dialogue between cultures. The first word from Volodin Volodin's comedy, chosen for the first performance, created a light, moving and human atmosphere on the stage. One man surrounded by seven women with different personalities. the situation is humorous, but it is precisely in that seemingly simple domestic story that the peculiarity of the Volodin theater is to see a person with his contradictions, weaknesses, with jokes and funny sides. The audience responded to the performance of the young actors with warmth and applause. The theater as a meeting place One of the important highlights of the evening was that the creation of a new theater is also seen as a platform for Armenian-Russian cultural ties and public diplomacy. Hakob Ghazanchyan noted that the theater aims to give a new impetus to modern Armenian drama and to continue strengthening Armenian-Russian theatrical ties. He also emphasized that in the near future plays by Gurgen Khanjyan, Karine Khodikyan, Samvel Kharatyan and other authors will be included in the schedule. Young people, experience and the audience Several important components have been united around the idea of a new theater: young actors, experienced management, modern dramaturgy and an audience that understands the language of theater. In his speech, Yuri Navoyan singled out these few circumstances, stressing that the youth theater, the presence of an experienced director, the new idea and, of course, the audience are important for the success of the new theater. According to him, there were "experienced spectators" in the hall that evening. Among the audience were well-known figures of culture and public life: Ara Gevorgyan, Ruben Babayan, Gurgen Khanjyan, Nora Armani, Samvel Martirosyan, Karen Kocharyan, Armen Smbatyan and other guests. Their presence gave the evening a tone not only of solemnity, but also of professional interest. Because the birth of a new theater is always an event. One stage for several cultures is also special in the idea of the New Theater that it tries to make cultural communication not a formal formulation, but a living creative process. In this sense, the theater is a truly unique space. Peoples do not meet here only through history, politics or official words. They meet through characters, laughter, silence, love, human weaknesses and truths born on stage. And the most beautiful moment of the evening... Maybe the most beautiful scene was not even on stage. After the performance, the audience was in no hurry to leave. People approached the young actors, congratulated them, talked and shared their impressions. At those moments, the theater ceases to be just a building, a stage and a performance. It becomes a meeting. And it is difficult to imagine a better beginning for the new theater. On September 15, a new theatrical name was born. The first speech was given to Volodin, the first laugh to the audience, the first applause to the young actors. Now the most important thing is to continue. Continue to create, stage, argue, experiment, discover new authors. And maybe years later, when they look back on the history of this theater, they will remember September 15, 2026 as the evening when the curtain was opened for the first time.
