Extending the operation period of the Armenian NPP until 2046 will require significant capital investments, which Rosatom estimates may cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Alexey Likhachev, the general director of the state corporation, announced this in a conversation with Armenian journalists. According to him, there is a technical possibility to extend the operation period of the station until 2046, but for this a large-scale modernization is necessary. In particular, it refers to safety and automation systems, additional work with the reactor core, ensuring the necessary equipment characteristics, as well as the storage capacity of spent nuclear fuel. to its expansion and renovation. "Quite serious investments are needed and we estimate them at the level of hundreds of millions of dollars," Likhachev said. According to him, the corresponding basins and storage capacities are designed for a shorter period of operation, therefore, in case of extending the operation of the plant until 2046, additional capital costs will have to be incurred. Likhachev also added that these costs will affect the electricity tariff. According to his assessment, based on the volume of necessary works, the cost of electricity may increase significantly, up to two times, in the period 2036-2046. That is why, according to the head of "Rosatom", Armenia should combine the economic expediency of further extending the operation of the existing plant with the possibility of moving to the construction of a new power unit. "Limit the operation of the station to 2036, but make a decision as soon as possible to move on to the construction of a new unit," Likhachev pointed out as one of the possible options.
