The mining sector opens up significant investment opportunities for Armenia, but at the same time it contains risks and requires a cautious approach. This was announced by Gohar Abajyan, director of the "Investment Promotion Center" foundation, speaking during the Mining Armenia Forum 2026. According to him, the mining industry requires large capital investments, and one successful transaction can be enough to fulfill the annual goal of attracting investments. At the same time, the sector is associated with serious copyright risks, so when promoting Armenia as an investment destination, it is necessary to carefully formulate the proposals and clearly explain what exactly the country can offer the investor. to the Abajyan emphasized that the mining industry is attractive for investments, and Armenia is no exception. At the same time, it is a complex and sensitive area, especially when it comes to minerals of strategic importance. Today, their importance has long gone beyond the boundaries of the mining sector. this topic occupies an important place in wider political discussions. Countries with large mineral reserves gain additional leverage in a variety of areas, including negotiations. For this reason, according to Abajyan, the key question for Armenia is how efficiently it uses the available resources and how it can ensure the maximum result from them. Abajyan noted that the Fund constantly discusses with the representatives of the Ministry of Economy Armenia's place in the chains of global value creation, where does the added value occur and what price does the country pay for its creation. Armenia is among the major exporters of molybdenum, has copper reserves, and mining and metallurgical companies operate in the country. However, as Abajyan noted, Armenia does not produce pure metals, which are used, for example, in the production of anti-aircraft defense systems and high-tech equipment. It is this question that the Foundation raises before its government partners and reflects in its vision, which it presents to potential investors. According to Abajyan, the creation of additional value should not be limited to the processing of raw materials. the real value is in the release of the finished product. "The question is how close we are to the final product and whether we are producing a product that is used in technology, chip manufacturing, etc.," he explained. The fund seeks to open employment opportunities in Armenia to international investors in the next stages of production chains. Abajyan admits that there is a long way from the extraction of minerals to the release of such a product. However, he connects this direction with the country's strategic goal, the formation of a knowledge-based economy. It should be noted that the co-organizers of Mining Armenia Forum 2026 are the "Mining Industry Forum" Development Fund and the Association of Mining and Metallurgy of Armenia. Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine and Lydian Armenia Company are the strategic sponsors of the third time forum, and the main sponsors are Ameriabank and "Teghut" CJSC.
